Concert for George

The Concert for George, a tribute to George Harrison, was on PBS the other night and we all sat down to watch it. It brought me to tears several times. What exactly brought on the tears? Well, it's like this: Eric Clapton was of course a close friend of George's for many years. So he was the producer of the show. Jeff Lynn was there too. Jeff Lynn is one of the premiere rock producers ever. So the show was just plain good. But what really did it was the authenticity of the guitar work. George Harrison was "just the guitar" player of the Beatles. So they happen to be the biggest rock act ever, he's still just the guitar player. You don't hear the extended solos from Harrison that we've become used to in the rock n roll world. Typically, just 8 bars - sometimes 16. When he took the solo, it counted. It had melody. It meant something. So Clapton was smart enough to get two great guitarists to back up the sound for this concert. And man were they good. The...

I Love War

The ridiculous title is on behalf of all my liberal/moderate friends who may have considered voting for the President if it wasn't for the Iraqi War. In other words, that single issue is keeping them from voting for him. Whereas: Sometimes, war is a necessary evil Your freedom was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001 and they'd kill you and your children if they could A solution must be sought; doing nothing is not an option A strategy to establish a democratic stronghold in the Middle East is risky and ugly but it is the best option The war we put off today will be fought tomorrow Therefore: Vote for President Bush If the Iraqi War is just one of many reasons you won't be voting for the President, that's great. Pistol Pete Reiser (updated)

While roaming through the Baseball Reference site (I added a permanent link to it on the Trivia Night Blog ) I remembered a story my dad told me about Pete Reiser. Turns out, he's the 2nd cousin of Leo Reiser, who attends our church. Leo's upwards of 85 years old now and was quite the musician in his day. He still composes (piano) and plays during Communion once a month. He's also a regular at our Coffee Houses. He loves Rogers & Hart/Hammerstein as much as I do and we've more than a few times blessed the crowd with his not-so-exact fingerings and my not-so-Howard-Keel-like voice. Each time he performs, I think to myself, "Boy, I hope I'm still doing that when I'm 85." Whenever my dad and Leo see each other, Leo says to him, "'morning Son," to which my dad replies, "'evening Star."
